Who we are ?

Since 1996,

SmartDisplayer team sensed the trend of multi-application card and started to develop Multi-Component Card (MCC) card for the project of Taiwan National ID Cards. From 1996 to 2001, SmartDisplayer developed lots of prototypes of MCC with glass LCD and plastic LCD.
However, it’s still can not commercialized because the liquid crystal is not impact-resistant, the power consumption of display is too high and the display is too thick.

On 2002, SmartDisplayer started to develop EPM using EPD for smart card application. We faced many technology limitation and barriers while developing for past 3 years.

On 2005, we surmounted those challenge and completed the world’s first viable display module (EPM & BDM) for ISO card application.

About us...

DisplayCard,The world’s first commercialized ISO card with an embedded display. The most key technologies are the integration of Electronic Paper Display (EPD) with SOC (System On Chip) designed by SmartDisplayer. Due to physical definition of ISO card, the features of DisplayCard’s materials and components shall be flexibility, low power consumption, impact-resistance and thinness. Unfortunately, the most popular flat display technology like LCD and APD do not meet those requirements.

EPD is flexible, bistable, impact-resistant and very thin. EPD totally comply with the definition of ISO card that LCD and APD do not meet. Besides EPD, the SOC is also a big challenge.

The IC needs to integrate high voltage EPD, very small battery, buzzer, button, and smart card reader/writer for ISO card’s protocol. There was no proper IC for DisplayCard with EPD before SmartDisplayer decided to develop an ASIC for this specific application. Finally, the ASIC was completed which integrates those electronics. Furthermore, SmartDisplayer designs and manufactures Electronic Paper Module (EPM) and Built-in Display Module (BDM) with own-designed SOC for smart card application.

Before DisplayCard, conventional smart card is just a device for authentication. Now, DisplayCards could be used for many applications such as one time password (OTP) for authentication card, balance of e-purse for transportation card and gift card, balance of e-coupon for loyalty card …etc. DisplayCard is an “A PC-like Smart Card” which has input function (smart card writer’s interface and button), output function (smart card reader’s interface and display) and power supply (embedded thin film battery).

Today, DisplayCard realizes the multi-application card and the third generation of smart card is coming.
